Dog training isn’t just about teaching puppies how to sit, drop, and spin. That’s the easy stuff!
It’s about dogs and humans learning how to navigate everyday life together.
Start early and focus on real-world skills like:
- staying calm around distractions
- walking nicely on lead in busy environments
- coming back when called around dogs and people
- learning emotional regulation and recovery skills
- developing impulse control
- building confidence in new situations
- practising appropriate social skills as they mature
- maintaining focus in a variety of environments
- learning that cues still apply in different places, not just at home
These skills don’t develop overnight.
They’re built gradually through guidance, repetition, positive experiences, and ongoing support as your puppy grows and changes.
The goal isn’t perfection – it’s to raise a dog who can successfully and safely navigate the real world alongside you.

This is the kind of training we do at Urban Dogs HQ. If you’re in Melbourne, consider joining our group classes for ongoing support.
